When I saw this story pop up on the Internet I knew it couldn’t be true. All of sudden the city of New York just ups and puts up masturbation booths for men without any political wrangling and public outcry? Hell, a masturbation booth is something the health department would shut down before the plans even got off the table. Plus common sense would dictate a masturbation booth be fully enclosed.
But that didn’t stop one of the best marketing stunts of 2016 from taking hold as fact. After all, there was an actual “GuyFi” booth on the street.
On January 15, prior the booths becoming the talk of social media there was this press release from the company named Hot Octopuss claiming ownership of the booths.
“With a staggering 80 per cent of Americans saying they suffer from workplace stress, award-winning sex toy brand Hot Octopuss has launched the world’s first ‘GuyFi’ male stress relief booth in Manhattan.
According to Time Out, a remarkable 39% of New Yorkers ‘self-soothe’ in the workplace to alleviate stress. Hot Octopuss has created the GuyFi booth to take this habit out of the office and into a more suitable environment designed to give the busy Manhattan man the privacy, and the high-speed Internet connection, he deserves.
Adam Lewis, Hot Octopuss co-founder and designer of PULSE, the world’s first Guybrator, said:
“There’s no denying that working a nine to five job can be stressful on both your mind and body, especially in a non-stop city like Manhattan. It’s really important for guys to look after themselves so that they can stay healthy and focus properly on the task in hand. We’re told time and time again how beneficial it is to have a break away from your desk.”
What is missed in this”announcement” was there was no mention of “New York Officials”. And trust me, something to the magnitude of masturbation booths would have had the officials all over it. No conservative would have missed going on record as having nothing to do with it while some liberals wouldn’t have missed the opportunity to explain it.
As I wrote earlier, a GuyFi booth was on the street.
That booth was a really a phone shelter converted for the purposes of the marketing ploy by the sex toy company Hot Octopuss.
In the end, I see the ploy as being successful. I certainly got the company the attention they wanted for the actual products they do sell and it got a conversation started about public masturbation. The latter definitely won’t be sanctioned by “booths” on city streets anytime soon.
