On Friday, January 29th, toy manufacturer Mattel announced it would be introducing a Fashionistas line of Barbie dolls that will include three new body types – tall, curvy and petite.
The company says they are aiming to more accurately reflect human proportions in its 56-year-old doll. The dolls will also be available in seven different skin tones, with two dozen hairstyles, and 22 eye colors available.
“Barbie reflects the world girls see around them,” explains Richard Dickson, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mattel, in a statement. “Her ability to evolve and grow with the times, while staying true to her spirit, is central to why Barbie is the number one fashion doll in the world.”
If the dolls pictured in the press releases are the same ones in the Fashionista line then we won’t be seeing a truly “thicka than snika” Barbie.
I can understand Mattel is walking the line between acheiving realism and crossing over into exploitation but I personally feel they fall short of “plus size” realism in this latest line of dolls.
The new dolls are already available for purchase online at Barbie.com. Mattel plans to have them in stores by springtime.
